If you want to dominate in games, it all starts with practice. The habits you build in training—your intensity, focus, and work ethic—are what separate great goalies from average ones. The best goalies don’t just go through the motions; they treat every practice like a game. They understand that practice isn’t preparation for the real thing—it IS the real thing.
The Mindset of a Winning Practice
Success in hockey—and in life—begins with the right mindset. If you show up to practice without intention, you’re just wasting time. Instead, approach every drill with a growth mindset, asking yourself:
How can I improve today?
What will I master by the end of practice?
How can I bring more intensity to my game?
Elite goalies don’t see practice as a chore; they see it as an opportunity to push their limits, make mistakes, and learn from them. They take pride in the details, knowing that their preparation will translate into dominance when the pressure is on.
Building Intensity in Practice
Your practice tempo determines your game speed. If you train at half-speed, you’ll play at half-speed. But if you treat every rep like it’s overtime in the playoffs, game day becomes second nature. Here’s how to bring intensity to every session:
Track every puck like your life depends on it. Don’t just go through the motions—fight for every save, even in warm-ups.
Stay engaged, even when the puck is at the other end. Visualize plays, track the game, and stay mentally sharp.
Compete against yourself. Set goals for each drill: limit rebounds, control your depth, or track pucks better.
When you push yourself in practice, the game slows down, and everything feels easier.
Developing Laser Focus
In a game, distractions are everywhere—crowds, mistakes, pressure—but the best goalies have unshakable focus. They train their minds to be locked in on the present moment. Here’s how you can build elite-level focus:
Breathe with purpose. Use deep, controlled breaths between reps to reset and stay locked in.
Eliminate negative self-talk. Every shot is a fresh start—don’t dwell on the last one.
Stay process-focused. Instead of thinking, I need to stop every shot, focus on your mechanics: Eyes first, body follows, control the rebound.
Character Traits That Set You Apart
Talent can get you noticed, but character keeps you at the top. The best goalies possess these key traits:
1. Resilience – Every goalie lets in goals. The great ones bounce back instantly.
2. Work Ethic – Show up early, stay late, and put in the extra reps.
3. Discipline – Stick to your routine, trust the process, and never take shortcuts.
4. Confidence – Believe in yourself, trust your preparation, and own your crease.
5. Leadership – Set the standard for intensity, focus, and attitude on and off the ice.
Practice Like It’s Game 7
Every practice is an opportunity to get one step closer to greatness. If you train with the same intensity, focus, and discipline that you would in a championship game, you’ll find that when the real games come, they’ll feel easier.
Practice is everything. The harder you work in training, the more natural and effortless your performance will be in games. Up the tempo in practice, and the game slows down. That’s how champions are made.
Now, step on the ice and train like a goalie who refuses to be outworked.
